Republican murals first sprang up in areas of Belfast in 1981, when IRA inmates of the Maze prison began a hunger strike in an unsuccessful bid to be recognized by the British government as political prisoners rather than common criminals. The first and most famous to die was Bobby Sands shown in this mural with the words: "Our revenge will be the laughter of our children." Posted by Hello
